Plane crash

7pm TV News

On September 1, in a story about an aircraft crash in Papua New Guinea, the ABC incorrectly reported that “the Lockhart River disaster which killed 15 people in 2005” was Australia’s worst airline disaster. In fact, the worst was Bakers Creek, Queensland in 1943 when a US Airforce plane crashed killing 40 military personnel, and the worst civil disaster was in Mackay on June 10, 1960 in which 29 people were killed.

Maldon bank

7pm TV News

On July 14, in a story about a proposal to build a bank on a heritage street in Maldon, the views of the Mayor of Maldon were not fully included in the story, and the plans of the bank shown on air were not the most up to date versions.

To clarify, it was the first to be given a licence under the new system. However, another distillery – the Small Concern Distillery – obtained a licence shortly afterwards, and was in fact the first distillery to put its whisky on sale to the public.

On August 24, in an article about a proposed new Jetstar pilot cadet scheme, the ABC incorrectly stated that regional airline Skytrans had introduced a fast-tracked pilot training program. Broadband policies

Local radio news

On August 12, a radio news report on the Labor Party’s broadband policy launch stated that its National Broadband Network promised data speeds of “1 Gigabit or 100 megabits per second”. In fact, 1 GB/s is equal to 1000 MB/s not 100 MB/s. Further, the same report stated that the Coalition’s broadband plan “would provide speeds up to 12 megabits per second.” The Coalition’s policy actually promises speeds of more than 12 MB/s, ranging up to 100 MB/s in some areas.

The World Today

On July 13, in a story about an investigation by the NSW Healthcare Complaints Commission into an group called the Australian Vaccination Network, a comment from the AVN denying that it is “anti-vaccination” was included in the introduction to this story but was inadvertently omitted in the sub editing process. It should also be noted that the NSW Healthcare Complaints Commission has now issued a health warning against the AVN over its refusal to post a disclaimer on its website.
